A summer wedding in Northern California is one of the most beautiful things there is. It is also warm, often sunny, and spans a long day.
Bridal makeup for summer needs to be built differently than a winter ballroom look. Here is what we focus on to make sure your makeup holds from getting ready through the last dance.
Skin Prep Is the Starting Point
Long-wearing makeup begins with the skin underneath it. When skin is well hydrated and properly primed, products adhere better and last longer.
We start with a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type, followed by a primer chosen specifically for your skin’s needs. Oilier skin types benefit from a mattifying base. Drier skin types need more hydration before we build on top.
Skipping or rushing this step is the most common reason makeup does not hold the way it should.
Product Selection Matters
Not all products are created equal for summer wear. We choose formulas with strong longevity and performance in warm conditions.
Long-wearing foundations, waterproof eyeliner and mascara, and cream or gel formulas that set cleanly on the skin are part of our approach for summer weddings. We also avoid heavy powders that can cake in heat.
Setting Techniques
Setting is how we lock everything in place. A combination of setting powder applied strategically and a quality setting spray at the end creates a seal over the makeup that helps it stay intact.
For brides who tend to be oily or who will be outside for extended periods, we may apply setting spray at multiple points during the application.
Touch-Up Planning
Even the best makeup can benefit from a midday refresh. We recommend a small touch-up kit for your maid of honor or a trusted person in your party.
A good kit typically includes: a translucent powder compact, a lipstick or gloss that matches your wedding lip, oil-absorbing sheets, and a small setting spray.
We are always happy to recommend specific products after your trial once we know what your full look involves.
Blushed Tip: Setting spray is not optional for summer weddings. Apply it at the end of application and carry a small bottle for midday touch-ups. One or two spritzes can refresh the whole look.
Managing Tears and Emotion
We use waterproof formulas on the eyes for every bride, regardless of how stoic you think you will be. Weddings are emotional in the best way. Your makeup should be ready for that.
The goal is simple: you should be able to cry at your ceremony, hug your family, dance for hours, and still look beautiful in your last photos of the night.
That is what we build toward.
